Watching the political process in action is truly something to pay attention too. Also participating in the political process is equally important. Elections are not a spectator sport. Grown folks are supposed to get involved. How do you do that, one might wonder? You get involved by registering to vote, and then on election day, you go to your designated polling place; and cast your ballot for the candidates of your choice. This is where it gets a little sticky. You need to know who the candidates of your choice are. There are those of us who stay woke–so we know who is running for the various political offices that are available. Those of us who are woke go to public candidate forums and meet and greets, where candidates will be, so we can sort of get to know them; hear what their platform is and why they’re running for a political office. Since the pandemic, public, in-person events are still not at an all-time high, so when you hear about candidate forums, that are on Facebook Live or on Zoom calls, connect. That’s how you get to have some sense of the people who are asking for your votes on election day. The worst thing to do–as it relates to election day, is to go in blindly, not knowing a darn thing about who is running for what. That’s just crazy.
Do your homework. It’s your civic responsibility.
Back to the political process, let me use the state of Wyoming as an example. This past week, that state held its primary election. Wyoming is a majority Republican state, so the Democrats honestly didn’t even think they had a chance to win. However, there were some Democrats reportedly who changed their voter registration to Republican–just so they could vote for incumbent U.S. Congresswoman Liz Cheney. Cheney was in an uphill battle against Harriet Hageman, an attorney who had the support and endorsement of Donald Trump. It appears that although Harriet Hageman is a political novice because so many Republicans in Wyoming are still hanging onto the thought of Donald Trump being the President again, they were upset to the ninth degree when Congresswoman Cheyney dared to vote to impeach Donald Trump, while he was President.
Cheyney is the 4th House Republican to lose a primary election after voting to get rid of Donald Trump.
Clearly, the majority of registered republicans in Wyoming wanted to see a Donald Trump-backed candidate take out Liz Cheyney because, to them it seems, if you cross Donald Trump, then they won’t vote for you.
While it’s said that some democrats changed over to the republican party just to be able to vote for Liz Cheyney in the primary, it just wasn’t enough. Depending on who you are, you might have been joyous that Cheyney lost or very disturbed that she didn’t pull off a win.
