The American Economy July 2022

Reading Time: 2 minutes

As I continue to explore what civics means and how critical it is to be civically engaged, I find more and more topics that are connected to the tree I call civics.

We are determined at the SCOOP USA Media Newspapers to inform and educate our readers about civic engagement. While we will always acknowledge that we think it is very important to teach civics in schools, from the time children are in grade school through middle school and high school, we are aware that in many instances, civics is not a part of school curriculums. That’s a shame.

Civics helps people to understand what their rights are as American citizens. It outlines our three branches of government. If you study our government, you can better understand how laws are made–and how laws can be changed.

You learn the rights of the President of the United States and all of his or her cabinet. To know even just a little bit about what it is to be a “good citizen” is to understand your right to vote and to exercise that right twice a year. I could go on and on about the branches on the tree I call civics. It’s knowing American history and then learning the real American history. (Some of what we were taught in school was absolutely not true, such as Columbus discovered America.) That simply was not true, but that’s what we were taught in the mid-1960s and before that.

I digress.

Today as I look at the huge subject of civics, I want to stress how important it is for grown folk to also pay attention to the economy. It’s about the spokes on the wheel that makes our nation turn and churn, 365 days a year. So, understanding, or at least trying to understand, the economy–is important.

SCOOP Newspaper is a part of a select group of African-American-owned newspapers across the nation that are on a list at the White House for Black-owned newsprint media. That means we get opportunities almost on a daily basis, to interview top leaders from the Biden Administration and others who help run our nation on major subjects.

This week, I got to speak with Dr. Cecilia Rouse, chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisers. (She is the first Black woman to serve in the President’s cabinet in this capacity).

Our subject was the American Economy as of July 21, 2022. Dr. Rouse, Ph.D. said,

“What is true about the American Economy is that we have had a historic increase in our growth rate over 2021.
