On the waterway to environmental stewardship

Reading Time: 2 minutes

PHILADELPHIA — June 2022 — This summer, ten high school students from the Philadelphia area will take part in an educational initiative designed to provide them with a greater awareness and knowledge of the Delaware River Watershed.

Glen Foerd, Philadelphia’s public park and non-profit cultural site along the Delaware River, launched its Riverways Ambassador Program last summer. Thanks to a grant from the William Penn Foundation and in partnership with the Riverways Collaboration, a consortium of non-profit organizations, of which Glen Foerd is a founding member, working together to create connections among local waterways and communities along the Delaware River.

The Riverways Ambassador Program is a six-week program starting the week of July 4 and ending the week of August 8. Ambassadors from Maritime Academy Charter School, Northeast High School, Bensalem High School, and Walter B. Saul High School will meet four days a week (Monday – Thursday) for five hours each day.

During the six-week course, Ambassadors will have the opportunity to participate in water quality testing and monitoring, create and implement their own environmental-based project, and develop on-water skills through kayaking and rowing. Participants will spend each day both on land and on water (pending weather), exploring Philadelphia’s local watershed.

“We’re excited to be welcoming this year’s Riverways Ambassadors,” said Sarah Ferguson, Glen Foerd’s environmental program manager. “The hope is that they come away with a greater appreciation for Philadelphia’s waterways and connect with paid hands-on learning experiences that teach them about or lead them to careers in environmental stewardship.” For more information about Glen Foerd’s Riverways Ambassador Program, contact Sarah Ferguson, Environmental Program Manager, at sarahferguson@glenfoerd.org. About Glen Foerd

Glen Foerd is an 18-acre public park and historic site located along the Delaware River in Philadelphia. Built in 1850 and enlarged in 1902-03, the estate—consisting of historic gardens, an Italianate-Classical Revival style mansion, and multiple additional structures—was saved from potential development through the activism of dedicated neighbors in 1983. Today, Glen Foerd focuses on welcoming a diverse community through a wide array of programs for all ages. As one of the only cultural sites located in Northeast Philadelphia, a rapidly changing area of the city, Glen Foerd aims to connect audiences from different backgrounds by offering unique and affordable experiences to engage with the arts and the environment. www.glenfoerd.orga
