Senators Hughes and Saval present state grant to historic Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz & Performing Arts

PHILADELPHIA – APRIL 16, 2021 – State Senators Vincent Hughes (D-Philadelphia/Montgomery) and Nikil Saval (D-Philadelphia) presented a $600,000 state Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) grant to the Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz & Performing Arts at the historic jazz club.
The announcement of the grant comes amid Jazz Appreciation Month, which honors the rich history and contributions of the American art form. The senators acknowledged the Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz & Performing Arts’ rich history and impact on Philadelphia and the surrounding region. The state grant will help the jazz club replace its roof, modify plumbing systems, upgrade indoor and exterior lighting, improve education studios facilities, and other critical improvements.
The Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz and Performing Arts was founded in 1935 by James Adams ad members of Local No. 274, Philadelphia’s African American musicians union, as the Local’s social club and to provide an opportunity for Black musicians. For more than 80 years spanning several home bases, the club has hosted the likes of like John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie, Nina Simone, Duke Ellington, Max Roach, Count Basie and more.
