On Tuesday, June 14, 2022, the Philadelphia Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority contributed $95,000 to The Legacy of Love Foundation via The Philadelphia Foundation.
The Philadelphia Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, as part of its 95th Anniversary celebration, has made history with an unprecedented contribution of over $220,000 to various charitable organizations to support educational scholarships for young people in the city of Philadelphia and homeless women and children.
Dr. Penny Sparks Nixon, President, Philadelphia Alumnae Chapter, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; Joy A. Guarneri, J.D., President of the Legacy of Love Foundation, were joined in the historic occasion by Pedro A. Ramos, President/CEO Philadelphia Foundation and Steven Scott Bradley, President and CEO of Bradley & Bradley Associates.
Previously as part of the 95th Anniversary celebration, the Philadelphia Alumnae Chapter contributed $105,000 to Cheyney University and Lincoln University for STEM Scholarships, respectively, and $20,000 to combat food insecurity and homelessness.
“The Philadelphia Alumnae Chapter is proud to support young people in the city of Philadelphia as they pursue their educational dreams. We understand that education remains the most powerful weapon to escape poverty and is critical to success in today’s workforce. Our $95,000 donation to the Legacy of Love Foundation fulfills our mission to celebrate our 95th anniversary in service to the communities in Philadelphia,” said Dr. Sparks Nixon.
The Legacy of Love Foundation was initiated in 1992 when Liller Green, an active member of the Philadelphia Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, made a gift of $25,000.00 to establish a Scholarship Endowment Fund on behalf of the Philadelphia Alumnae Chapter. A capital campaign grew the Scholarship Fund to $250,000 by 2002. In 2004 the Fund was renamed to the Legacy of Love Foundation, Inc. and was registered with The Philadelphia Foundation to create an endowment fund. Since 2004 The Legacy of Love Foundation has awarded more than $275,000 in scholarships to deserving students in the Philadelphia area.
“We are enormously proud and grateful to receive this donation. As a non-profit we depend on individual and corporate donations to fund our scholarship endowment,” stated Joy A. Guarneri, president of the Legacy of Love Foundation. “This generous gift goes a long way toward bringing us closer to our current goal of reaching $1 million dollars in our Scholarship Endowment Fund.”
