Sheriff Rochelle Bilal is no stranger to serving her community as an elected official. Serving as the Sheriff of Philadelphia since November 2019, whether feeding Philadelphia’s homeless population, tackling food insecurity, Covid-19 testing and vaccines, or winter coat and toy drives, Sheriff Bilal has continued to show her commitment to the city of Philadelphia.
Her most recent undertaking was a two day pop up clinic at the Philadelphia Convention Center that serviced more than 600 individuals who otherwise wouldn’t have been able to obtain medical, dental and vision care. For some of us something as routine and lifesaving as a mammogram is out of the realm of possibility. Sheriff Bilal and her partners in this initiative sought to level the playing field–so to speak. There was information on Sickle Cell, testing for HIV, Covid-19 testing and vaccinations, pap smears, mammograms, eye examinations. Eyewear was made on the premises. Those requiring bi-focals, were mailed their glasses. Every person needing or wanting services during the 2-day event was served, making the 2-days a major success for the city of Philadelphia and it’s citizens.
“With the strains and stresses of the 2-plus years of a global pandemic, lack of medical and dental insurance or in some cases the un-affordability of co-pays, this clinic was absolutely necessary and a blessing to the City of Philadelphia,” said Bilal.
