Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon (DPS 5th District) visited with students at Chester High School participating in the SIFMA Foundation’s Capital Hill Challenge Program, underwritten by the Charles Schwab Foundation. The national competition is 14 weeks of financial education pairing individual members of Congress with every congressional district, equipping middle and high school students to become financially capable and civic-minded.
Chester High Marketing Teacher Chassidy King said, “Our students have been participating in the Stock Market Game–part of the game gives the students an opportunity to learn how to invest, trade…not just in different companies but in themselves.” It helps them learn about the economy and how news and media influence global markets. The students learn about gains and losses, interest, and how to calculate it.
Congresswoman Scanlon explained the importance of Financial Education, Fiscal Policymaking, and the Capital Markets, following which the curious students asked questions.
Student questions ran the gamut from how and why the Congresswoman decided to run for Congress–to what steps the Congresswoman would recommend students take in planning for the future with respect to education, employment, civic engagement, and finance.
One student asked, “What is the role of Congressman/woman in helping build our economy?”
Another posed the question, “How do elected officials support job growth, business development, and employment?”
