Every now and then, even though some of the craziness and violence we hear about and or see on our streets and in our communities, you will find a person who is still under the age of 40, who may not be the richest person in the room, but who has a heart so big and who gives so much to uplift others in worse circumstances, that it’s amazing. That’s who Tyree May is. A student who made it through the Pittsburgh Job Corps Center but is a native of Philadelphia who says he learned the carpentry trade there and earned his carpentry certification there. That’s one of the ways Tyree has supported himself and his vision for the last six years to start his own nonprofit, called Talented Tyree Exchange, by doing carpentry work.
Tyree May stated, “I started my organization Talented Tyree Exchange because I wanted to do my part to help in our community, in our city. When I look around, I see so many people who look hungry, people living on the street, people who just need a little compassion and some resources to get back on their feet. I know I’m not a rich man, but I still knew that I could help. I would see so many organizations and groups doing food giveaways, and I wondered how do they get all this food to hand out for free to those in need? So I started studying how it’s done– and before long, after saving some of my money from my carpentry work and t-shirt business and working as a security guard overnights, I was able to save enough money to purchase low-cost food. I started doing some limited cooking because I love to cook, and then I hand the food out at a location where I know homeless people congregate.”
