Anson Construction host Informational Forum for Seniors

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Mary Lopez hosted an information forum aimed at Chester’s wiser citizens on Thursday morning, April 14th, at Anson Construction’s Home Office and Event Space, located at 419 Edgemont Avenue in Chester. Lopez formed the idea for the event following a conversation with a Meals on Wheels representative–in which the representative stated, “They no longer provide services to the City of Chester due to lack of volunteers.” Meals on Wheels receives some federal support through the Older American Act and Medicaid dollars, as well as from the USDA. More than 70 percent of their annual budget comes from contributions from the community.

Many of the recipients of this charity are elderly, and many of the volunteers are elderly. Research shows that home-delivered meal programs significantly improve diet quality, increase nutrient intakes, reduce food insecurity and improve the quality of life among recipients. The programs also reduce government expenditures by reducing the need for recipients to use hospitals, nursing homes, or other expensive community-based services. https://en.m.wikipedia.org

Lopez gathered community organizations and leadership to increase awareness of the services available to the elderly, potential hazards to their safety and security, and ways they can protect themselves and their families.
