Did you know Philly has a Civics Engagement Office?

Reading Time: < 1 minute

This Civics 101 column was created in 2020 by Sherri Darden, the Publisher and Owner of the SCOOP USA Media. As a mother, grandmother, concerned citizen and someone who loves Philadelphia and loves her community, she is convinced that not enough people care about Civic Education anymore. If you ask most young people what does it mean when someone asks you what does your ‘civic duty’ mean, they have no answer.

So through this column in the SCOOP every week, we bring various subjects up that have a tie-in to understanding our civic duties. Let me give you an example. Registering to vote is a civic duty. Voting is a civic duty. Paying taxes is a civic duty. Participating in Jury Duty when requested is a civic duty, etc. The list goes on. It has been fun as this column continues to develop for me as a writer to find new angles on information I can share–that is worthy under the headline, ‘Civics 101.’

For all the columns I’ve written under ‘Civics 101,’ I cannot believe I have not shared information about the Philadelphia Mayor’s Office of Civic Engagement and Volunteer Service. This office has a lot to offer. They even have a Civic Engagement Academy.

The Civic Engagement Academy inspires local community change through training and skills development.

The Mayor’s Office of Civic Engagement and Volunteer Service (OCEVS) helps residents make positive change in their communities. Toward this goal, the staff of OCEVS work to reduce barriers and expand capacity for participation.
