PHILADELPHIA, PA (April 1, 2022) — On Saturday, Philly Spring Cleanup returns, highlighting 15 years of community cleaning partnerships. The event is hosted by the Philadelphia Department of Streets and is billed as the city’s largest single-day cleanup event.
The Streets Department estimates 400 different cleanup projects will take place across the city on Saturday, April 2 beginning at 9:00 a.m. Residents and stakeholders in communities across the city organize block and neighborhood cleanups and encourage residents to get involved in helping to make our great city a cleaner and greener place to live. Philly Spring Cleanup also signals the start of Philadelphia More Beautiful Committee’s cleaning season with a bulk of projects being registered by Philadelphia’s block captains.
Cleanups are scheduled in nearly every community of the City. The list below is a small sampling of projects registered by community members (above):
“I am extremely grateful to all of our residents for their participation in the Philly Spring Cleanup. The Philly Spring Cleanup has become a City tradition that brings together communities who want to take ownership of their blocks, neighborhoods and parks by keeping them clean and green for present and future generations,” said Mayor Kenney. “While today marks the start of Philadelphia’s cleaning season, our goal is to sustain this energy and to continue to strive to keep Philadelphia beautiful. Thank you all for your efforts and unrelenting energy. Most importantly thank you for taking pride in your city. We could not do this without you.”
The Streets Department provides the supplies and schedules a special collection for all gathered materials. Volunteers provide the manpower to cover as much area as possible in a single day. City leadership visits select sites throughout the day to offer support of the volunteers and replenish supplies. The unique partnership solidifies the Department’s and community partners shared commitment to improve the City of Philadelphia for its residents and visitors.

Since its 2008 launch, a combined total of 200,000 volunteers have removed more than 11.4 million pounds of trash and 950,000 pounds of tires from city streets at nearly 6,750 project sites.
