Every year the students from the Chester Unified School District schools get excited about going head-to-head in a “Jeopardy” style tournament called the Heritage Bowl. Due to the necessary constraints of the global pandemic and the subsequent shutdown, there hasn’t been a Heritage Bowl held for almost three years. The young academics certainly lost none of their zeal for the good-natured competition, and all the students were articulate, engaged, and focused. The eleven students that took part were eager. Eight girls and three boys showcased their knowledge of Black History, causing some adults in the audience to rethink their own knowledge of our history.
Deputy Director of Public Property and Recreation was the moderator for this year’s event. The teams were asked a series of questions, and the first team to reach thirty correct answers was crowned the winner and presented with a trophy. Main Street School took home the trophy and bragging rights for 2022.
In honor of Black History Month, all of the questions were centered around the history, contributions, and accomplishments of African Americans in society. The children taught quite a few adults the history of African Americans of whom we had no prior knowledge. The Heritage Bowl proved to be both–extremely enlightening and a lot of fun.
