Support for the return of stolen African artifacts and imprisoned human remains to Africa is gaining traction worldwide. Recent events have reinforced the long-standing demands from African nations. The first was the Sarr-Savoy report commissioned by French President Emmanuel Macron, which recommended the return of the artifacts. The Rhodes Must Fall movement and the global Black Lives Matter demonstrations brought the issues of structural racism, the legacies of slavery, empire, and colonialism to the forefront of the conversation. Discussion of critical race theory and de-colonialism among Black academics has provided the intellectual foundation for the return of icons.
