Rising Through the Ashes: Healing Pain and Provoking Solidarity with Author Tiona Brown Smith

Reading Time: < 1 minute

“I think that the way that I am able to connect with people is through pain. Most people know pain more than they know love. Going and touching on some of the dark times in people’s lives is an ability to break down the shield. Then you can connect with them on the level of – Hey, I had this experience, you’ve had this experience…now let’s move past this – let’s move forward.”

– Tiona Brown

If there is one thing we can all relate to in this life, it is quite possible that it can be a pain. From childhood trauma to broken relationships and even struggles with self-love, most people will be challenged to overcome these setbacks within their lifetimes.

Tiona Brown Smith, author, playwright, director, mother, wife, and community activist, uses her gift of writing to inspire deeper healing. Having experienced sexual trauma and abuse early in her childhood, bringing her story to the forefront has since inspired others to be courageous in sharing theirs and moving past the burdens of shame, humiliation, and depression. Writing has been one way to connect with a global audience, and through this cathartic release, she has grown to develop a rich community of others passionate about the same. Her written work Ain’t No Sunshine, which debuted earlier this month, hosted by Theatre Horizon, seeks to continue to establish community awareness and partnership.
