NORRISTOWN, PA – The Montgomery County Overdose Task Force Working Group will host a free NARCAN® drive-through distribution event in recognition of International Overdose Awareness Day on August 31. The event will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit, 2 West Lafayette Street, Norristown, PA 19401.
“We want to continue to reduce the stigma and raise awareness about overdose treatment and resources,” said Dr. Valerie A. Arkoosh, Chair of the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners. “NARCAN is an effective harm reduction tool that allows individuals to avoid the fatal effects of overdoses.”
Naloxone, also known as NARCAN, is an easy-to-use life-saving nasal spray that can halt the effects of a potentially fatal narcotic overdose. Individuals who show signs of an overdose can be revived with naloxone until they are able to get medical treatment.
During the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic and quarantine, many residents with addictions reported feeling isolated and depressed, leading to an increase in overdoses. Even though some restrictions have been lifted, some residents are still struggling to access services and get on the path to recovery. The drive-through event reduces contact, giving everyone a safer way to get NARCAN during the pandemic.
For those who are not able to attend the drive-through event, NARCAN kits can be ordered online here or by calling the Montgomery County Office of Public Health at 610.278.5117 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Individuals must watch a quick training video to get the kit.
First responder agencies requesting approval to receive NARCAN kits must be located in Montgomery County and should review the information and complete the steps on this page.
There is still a standing order for naloxone in Pennsylvania, so residents can also get it from a local pharmacy by using insurance to pay.
