The November 5, 2024, General Election is said and done, and the reality is Republicans won big time. Looking at the numbers both in the popular vote and the electoral vote, former president Donald Trump won, hands down. It’s almost as if he trounced Vice President Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. Someone asked me the day after the election, “Once all the mail-in ballots are counted across the country, will that make a difference, and can Kamala Harris still win?” My response was, “No.” It’s over.
At the Federal level, Republicans have won back both the House and the Senate. I just don’t know how Democrats are going to get anything passed over the next few years unless lawmakers agree to play nice.
The main thing that I’ve been hearing repeatedly (since the vote count became official) from everyday Democratic citizens is that they are stunned. They are shocked. They can’t believe Kamala Harris lost and by so much. The last time I checked in on the vote count for Philadelphia County, the Harris Waltz team won the city with 78% of the vote. That’s three points less than Joe Biden won back in 2020.
That begs the question, what happened? Here’s a large part of what I think happened. Unfortunately, I think there were people in the Democratic party, good, honest people, who got played. Simple as that. I believe there were “political interest groups,” some perhaps from the Hispanic community, others perhaps from some Caucasian women’s groups, and some from some Black men’s groups, who smiled in the Dems’ faces, took money, and cut sister Kamala on election day like someone might slice a ripe apple.
I further believe that the Harris campaign “thought” they had certain groups in the bag (but on election day), the votes they thought they had evaporated. Above and beyond what I’m putting together as to why Kamala Harris didn’t win the White House, the MAGA people, Donald Trump’s people, many of them are, how shall I say, very different, outrageous, angry, mean, even racist, Not all Trump people are that way– but enough of them are that they had the guts to storm the Capitol building on January 6, 2021.
I will repeat again (in this column), as I do ever so often when writing about politics, SCOOP USA Media does not endorse any political candidates.
However, as a columnist and a diehard voter who loves civic engagement, I would be totally remiss if I didn’t say out loud, in print, what so many Americans with good sense are thinking. How can a person who has been convicted of 34 felonies, who makes racist, sexist, homophobic remarks, who makes fun of people with disabilities, and who has shown how much he dislikes African Americans and other people of color, how can such a person get a second chance at running the nation? Yet it has happened.
