“Jesus, O’how sweet the name!”

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Acts 4:12 Neither is there Salvation in any other; for there is no other name under heaven given among men, Whereby we must be saved.

The name Jesus has done much for our perishing world. His name has healed the ill, unstopped deaf ears, and given strength to the feeble knees so they could stand, run, and shout for joy.

The name Jesus has brought new orders in many conservative societies; it has made friends out of enemies and has caused soldiers to lay their war implements aside and live at peace with each other.

But, even greater, the name Jesus has brought Salvation to earth for everyone who wants it and seeks it. Yes, Salvation is that which should be close to our hearts, for it is our rescue from wrath and damnation as well as our restoration to God’s favor and blessings.

Now, our Salvation is not in ourselves and cannot be obtained by any merits of ours. We can destroy ourselves, but we cannot save ourselves. We have many names among men that pretend to be saving names but are not. We have many institutions that pretend to instill reconciliation and correspondence between God and man but cannot do it.

Now, a name is the label or title. It is what we choose to call or be called by. A name to some may mean fame, prestige, and reputation, while to others, it is only a mark of distinction. Names are used to describe and define people. They are used to nominate and delegate. A name is most important on a charge account, for we cannot have one without it.

A name is something that endures while our beauty fades away. Everyone has three names: One given by parents, the name others call us, and the one we make for ourselves. One’s name influences one’s life. My name means something to me; it came by the way of my father. He tried to be somebody and taught the same to me. It’s wonderful to grow up with a good name and then be able to depart with the same.

Yes, our given name is from our parents, but the name that is really worth something or nothing we can earn for ourselves.

You know, mankind has tried other names than Jesus in attempts to salvage something and satisfy our longings.
