City Council Report

Reading Time: 2 minutes

City Council October 10, 2024
October is Hispanic Heritage Month, where the accomplishments of the Latino culture are celebrated throughout our nation. Philadelphia City Council paid homage to several individuals of Latin heritage who’ve made significant contributions to the City of Philadelphia and elsewhere.

Quetcy Lozada Introduced a Resolution honoring Argenus Figueroa, a Philadelphia-based journalist who spent his entire broadcast career reporting local and national news to Philadelphia’s Latino community, supporting the development of the Hispanic community in the tri-state area, reporting and investigating information and resources that federal, state, and local governments for communities to improve their quality of life.

A Resolution honoring Clotilde Jimenez, a world-renowned Philadelphia artist, with the honor and privilege to design posters for the Paris Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games.

A Resolution honoring Geisha Torres, a Venezuelan-born sports reporter, and anchor…the first woman in the country to serve as a play-by-play commentator for the NBA.

Jimenez remarked, “Thank you to Philadelphia’s esteemed City Council for recognizing us artists and people working in the creative industry. Art has the potential to change perspective and how we live and see one another in Philadelphia and the world. Growing up here has shifted and molded me as a man, in how I see myself and in how I want to project and move forward.”

A Resolution honoring Pedro R. Rosario for his promotion to Deputy Commissioner and first Latino to hold the position in the 226-year history of law enforcement in the City of Philadelphia. Sworn in on January 11, 2024, Rosario has dedicated 30 years of honorable service to the City of Philadelphia, being decorated on 12 occasions for bravery and heroism.

“I want to tell you something my parents always would tell me, and it haunts me to this day. If not me, then who? I know my colleagues here in Council, my family in blue, and my wife standing next to me all understand that call to service. Unfortunately, in today’s society, it’s not something that’s held in high regard–but it’s very important that we, as a city, an organization, and a society, continue to push that narrative. If not me, then who?” said Rosario.

“I want to say thank you to all who have taken advantage of participating in one or more of the Hispanic Heritage Month events throughout the City of Philadelphia. I hope that you were able to learn a little bit more about those who are doing the work in the Latino community and across the city as we work to promote the Latino culture of our city.

If you’ve not taken advantage, there’s still time. Hispanic Heritage Month ends October 15, and there are still several events still to come,” said Lozada.

Privilege Resolution on Final Passage Calendar for today, honoring WURD Radio on its Founder’s Day, which memorializes the late Owner and Founder Walter P. Lomax, Jr. MD and recognizes its role as the voice of the African American community.
