The Philadelphia Juneteenth Family invites you to participate in the joyous, historic occasion of Juneteenth “Freedom Day” that will be celebrated through- out the city, the state, and the nation. Philadelphia will host several ceremonies and activities in connection with, and leading up to the historic date of June 19th.
On Monday, June 7, 2021, the Philadelphia Juneteenth Family kicked
off the Juneteenth celebrations with the Juneteenth Flag Raising Ceremony.
This ceremony at Philadelphia City Hall and was held in conjunction with the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation. The Juneteenth Flag Raising Ceremony consisted of presentations from the Juneteenth Family, Councilman Kenyatta Johnson, Sheriff Rochelle Bilal, Congressman Dwight Evans, and represen- tatives from Senator Anthony William’s and Senator Sharif Street’s offices. In addition, many business and community leaders presented and shared in the kick-off of Philadelphia’s Juneteenth celebrations.
Upcoming Events and Programs: The Philadelphia Juneteenth Family, along with our community partners, the Greater Philadelphia YMCA, and Philadelphia Parks and Recreation is presenting a Juneteenth Poster and Essay Contest for Children and Youth enrolled in their programs, ages 6-19. Cash prizes totaling $2,500 will be awarded to the winners, along with internships with our production and social media partners Elements Media and Ducor Media. Contest winners’ posters and essays will be on display at the YMCA and Recreation Centers. All the youth will re- ceive a certificate of participation.
Parx Casino has created the Parx Juneteenth Museum in partnership with The Philadelphia Juneteenth Family, the Philadelphia African American Museum, and the new Bucks County African American Museum.
