“The Worst of-Best of Times”

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Lord, Help us to give Thanks, be Grateful to you at all times,
and give You praise for all things. Amen.

I thank God for blessing me to see another day. But amid my joy, I’m sad. I’m sorry, and my heart is broken because of what’s going on in my hometown, as well as black communities across America. As I heard a pastor say one Sunday, for us (Black folks), these are the worst of times and the best of times. This thought came from a novel by author Charles Dickens entitled A Tale of Two Cities, set in London and Paris before and during the French Revolution. The book is a historical, fictional political commentary.

These are the worst of times because young black males are killing each other daily, but then these are the best of times because we are making advances in medical technology and living much longer. A sister in my neighborhood is 103 years old, takes care of herself, and is still the head cook at her church and an adviser to the Usher Board.

These are the worst of times because too many of our children are still dropping out of school, and those who are still there are being misled. However, these are the best of times because some of us are graduating not only with advanced degrees but at the top of the class. We are superintendents and the heads of major companies.

These are the worst of times because many of us are still living below the poverty level and go to bed hungry every night, but it’s the best of times because we do have our multi-millionaires in the business and entertainment world. These are the worst of times because of the injustices that we find ourselves in when we go to the courts, but these are the best of times because we have more black judges and lawyers in this country than ever before.

These are the worst of times because black children know more about Love and Hip And Hop, Atlanta House Wives, Scandal and the Game than they do about W.E.B. Dubious, Marcus Garvey, Fannie Lou Hammer, and Rosa Parks. Still, it’s the best of times because they saw for themselves a brother living in the best public housing in the world, The White House. His ancestors rode in on a slave ship, but he rode in a Boeing 747 called Air Force One.

O beloved, it’s the worst of times because the Devil is busy, Lucifer is still going to and fro, Satan is still raising Hell, and the Coronavirus has changed our everyday living, but it’s the best of times because GOD is still on the throne. GOD is still in the blessing business. GOD is still making a way out of no way. GOD is still the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. GOD is, yes, God is, still GOD. So whatever the time, don’t worry, be blessed, and be happy because GOD IS. Can I get an AMEN and DO THE HOLY GHOST SLIDE UP IN HERE, UP IN HERE!
