Philadelphia City Council April 11, 2024
There are some important takeaways from last week’s Council Meeting– but I think that it’s safe to say that the majority of Councilmembers were shocked, appalled, and dismayed at the violence that took place in West Philly near the Philadelphia Masjid at Clara Muhammad Square during the Eid al-Fitr celebrations which mark the end of Ramadan. There were times in the Council Chamber when the atmosphere appeared downright somber, and it seemed everyone was immersed in a deep sadness.
Councilmember Jamie Gauthier, who represents the 3rd District, expressed her surprise and profound sadness about the violence that occurred at the peaceful event and commended the Philadelphia Police Department for their quick and brave response, believing that this action lessened the severity of the violence. Gauthier stressed that places of worship should be safe spaces and pledged to closely monitor ongoing investigations. Voicing her concern for her constituents who suffered trauma during what was supposed to be a peaceful day, Gauthier also promised collaboration with the Masjid and public safety agencies to address youth violence and enhance community safety.
Using the incident to express her views on gun control, Gauthier said, “She believes implementing practical gun safety measures is the most effective way to prevent mass shootings. Urging Harrisburg and Congress to act to reduce the availability of guns in the community, she concluded her statement with a call for lawmakers at state and federal levels to implement gun safety measures to prevent future incidents. Gauthier emphasized the importance of addressing gun violence, especially in places of worship.
Philadelphia Land Bank Hearings
The Philadelphia Land Bank is expected to be a dependable partner for Philadelphia residents to assess the viability of combining public and private vacant properties to create opportunities for Economic and community development; it should also be responsive, accountable, and transparent.
