Lord, Bless our dreams to become a reality for us and our children’s children, so we can make this old world into a new world of Love and Brotherhood. Amen
In the second chapter of the Book of Daniel, there is the story of King Nebuchadnezzar’s dream. He could not remember the dream, and none of the wise men of his court in Babylon could tell him what his dream had been. But Daniel told the King that he would reveal and interpret the dream if he could have a little time. Daniel and his three fellow captives prayed, and God revealed the dream to Daniel in a night vision. When he told the King what his dream had been and what it meant, Daniel was rewarded.
We experience dreams in the night. But we can also consciously dream through our aspirations and ambitions. Children dream of growing up. Parents dream of educating their children. Grandparents dream of leisure, travel, and comfort. But we must not forget a segment of society that has no more dreams. The very old who have been placed in nursing homes and forgotten, have little or nothing to look forward to; they have no more dreams left. What are we doing to make their remaining days on earth more meaningful and cheerful?
Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. was a dreamer because he knew it was good to dream and to plan for a better future. Whatever your age or problem, make a down payment on a dream. Most of the great inventions can be traced back to a dream. We often scold children for daydreaming. But when a person dreams a good dream and makes the dream come true, the world is blessed.
Travel today is fast and convenient because the Wright brothers dreamed they could build a flying machine. Now, people can go to almost any place in the world on jet planes.
Henry Ford had the dream of mass-producing a car that common people could afford. As a result, almost every family in America today owns one or more cars.
A boy sitting under a tree followed a dream that he could make a machine that would help his loved ones hear well. Alexander Graham Bell later made his dream come true by inventing the telephone.
Our generation witnessed the fulfilled dream of sending men into space. Dreams made science fiction a reality. In our daily lives, we enjoy the technology that resulted from these explorations. The future may reveal additional benefits. The capability to dream and make them come true is one way God set man above the other creatures.
Sunday School leaders can inspire us to think big and go out to win people for Christ. Evangelists of our day have big dreams of presenting Christ to multitudes. Over radio and television, they share their dreams with the listening world. Because of their vision, people throng to vast crusades. We also need dreams for our local churches and a willingness to work together to make those dreams come true.
