Keystone First, the largest Medicaid health plan in Southeastern Penn- sylvania, teamed up with the Church of Christian Compassion to provide Thanksgiving Day meals for thousands of homeless men, women, and children in Philadelphia.
The Great Family Gathering is a strategic partnership between the Medicaid managed care organization and community-based groups such as Christian Compassion, committed to creating healthier communities. Participating in the Great Family Gathering is part of Keystone First’s overall mission to address the social and economic barriers to good health.
On Monday, November 20, 2023, McAlister Hall on the Drexel University Campus in Philadelphia was the venue for the event, the Great Family Gathering, an annual endeavor to address hunger in Philadelphia for the most vulnerable members of society.
Since its inception 20 years ago, the Great Family Gathering event has provided meals for more than 80,000 people. This year, church and event volunteers prepared, packaged and delivered more than 4,000 dinners to 65 homeless shelters throughout the City of Philadelphia on the Monday before Thanksgiving.
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Great Family Gathering, State House Speaker Joanna McClinton and Keystone First Market President Joanne McFall thanked the volunteers for their efforts to address hunger during the holidays.
Other dignitaries and community stakeholders in attendance were Lead organizer of the Great Family Gathering, Member of the Church of Christian Compassion Bonnie Earl, Mayor-Elect Cherelle Parker, State Senator Anthony Williams (8th District), Philadelphia Councilmember Jamie Gauthier (District #), Philadelphia 76er and Philadelphia native Marcus Morris.
