There are so many things that can make for good citizens. Voting is something everyone should do once they turn age 18. Cleaning up outside in front of where you live every day makes for a good citizen. Coming out to community meetings and acting as if you care about your neighborhood; makes for being a good citizen. Always striving to come up with tangible ways to uplift your city and your community, that makes for being a good citizen.
Being a good citizen is a part of the pie of what civics is all about. You should know the basic history of our nation. You should know who your elected officials are. You should have a basic understanding of the three branches of our government. You absolutely should obey the laws of our city, state, and nation. Back to being a good citizen. It’s civics all wrapped up in a huge ball.
From where I sit, there’s nothing wrong with aiming to be a good citizen and a good neighbor; groups like that should be applauded–to that end, I am spotlighting the Allegheny West Foundation today in my Civics Column because this 501(c)3 nonprofit organization works to be a good citizen for our community in North Philadelphia every single day. Ron Hinton, Jr., the President of the Allegheny West Foundation, is offering small business owners, entrepreneurs, vendors, and non-profits a wonderful opportunity. Every Friday during July and August, you will have a FREE opportunity to sell your wares and promote your products and services, and share resource information.
When was the last time you heard of an organization hosting an outdoor festival marketplace kind of event and not charging vendors? Ron Hinton says he simply wants to help lift business-minded people up, and certainly he wants to help nonprofits. Allegheny West Foundation has announced that beginning Friday, July 14, they will host the PA State Senator Milton T. Street Memorial Vendors Marketplace and Outdoor Resource Center. This event each week will be free of charge, out-side on the grounds of the Panati Recreation Center at 3101 N. 22nd Street, on the following dates: Friday, July 14, Friday, July 28, Friday, August 4, Friday, August 11, Friday, August 18, and Friday, August 25. This series of free Friday Vendors Marketplace activities and Outdoor Resource Center is being made possible through a grant from the City of Philadelphia Department of Commerce. The grant is a Corridor Safety Enhancement Grant, and the goal is to bring information and resources to the community that can assist families in need. The vendor marketplace will also give small business owners, vendors, and entrepreneurs an opportunity, at no charge, to come and sell their products or services.
Ronald E. Hinton, Jr., President of the Allegheny West Foundation and the visionary behind the PA State Senator Milton T. Street Memorial Vendors Marketplace and Outdoor Resource Center, stated, “Thanks to this grant AWF has received from the Commerce Department, not only will we have free spaces where vendors can come and set up and sell their wares and nonprofits can have tables that billboard the resource information they have, we will have a couple of large tents set up where each Friday we will offer mini-seminars on how to protect your home from a home invasion, good sense safety tips from the Philadelphia Police Department for shoppers and merchants alike, we’ll have self-defense demonstrations, healthy and nutritious cooking demonstrations from Philabundance, and an art pavilion for children where they can paint and create their own masterpieces and other attractions:
“It’s all about getting information out to the residents in our service area that can educate them about safety issues and healthy eating,” Ron Hinton continued. “It’s also for sharing information with our target audience about where to go to get emergency services when you need them, etc. The Corridor Safety Enhancement Grant is a wonderful opportunity for AWF to help lift up our neighbors.
