We are just short of three weeks away before it’s Primary Election Day in Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Primary Election will take place on Tuesday, May 16th. What’s at stake? Everything, particularly if you’re thinking about the City of Philadelphia. In Philadelphia, the candidate who wins the Primary Election on the Democratic side (more than likely) will become the 100th Mayor of Philadelphia. Because Democrats have such a large number of registered voters, above and beyond what Republicans have been able to garner for decades, history shows that the person who wins the Primary on the Democratic side will become our next Mayor.
So here’s the situation. On the ballot, voters have to decide who they want to support for Mayor. They have to decide who they want to support for Philadelphia City Council in the district–where they live. Then they also have to decide which five candidates they want to vote for, for City Council At Large Seats. Some twenty-eight individuals are vying for those five seats. All total, we have seventeen city council members that will be voted in, in November during the general election. The Primary election will indicate winners for each party. For example, the 8th District incumbent City Councilwoman has one Democratic opponent in the upcoming Tuesday, May 16th Primary Election. Whichever of them wins at the end of the day on May 16th will face off against a Republican candidate in the Fall.
Just like I referred to the Mayoral race and being about ninety-eight percent certain that the Democrat who wins the Primary Election will be the next Mayor, the same goes for City Council, for Sheriff, for Register of Wills, for City Controller, all these seats are up for grabs to see who will be left standing after May 16th.
Also, don’t forget there are ten City of Philadelphia Common Pleas Court seats available; and there are also two City of Philadelphia Municipal Court seats available. There are four questions on the ballot. I shared those questions two weeks ago in the SCOOP. We will share them again before May 16th.
