50 Mass Shootings in America in under 35 Days

Reading Time: 6 minutes

We have had 50 mass shootings in America in under 35 days, and are wondering about the violence on our streets in Philadelphia.
As much as I dislike writing about negative news, it is my responsibility, to tell the truth, even when the truth hurts. I do not write about every crime that occurs in Philadelphia. If I did, there wouldn’t be enough space in the SCOOP for all the unfortunate stories. Every year, I can look back at the columns I have submitted to the SCOOP, and I will find that indeed at least twenty to twenty-five of them are about people whose lives have been stolen from them at the hands of people who have chosen to become murderers.
What I also do as I write sad columns that report stories about innocent people who were murdered, is always include a sentence or two that shares the fact that Philadelphia, a city I love, is not the only city where we are in a battle against crime and violence. Based on television news reports we all see, you hear a lot about killings in our home town of course, and in such cities as Chicago, Houston, L.A., and Detroit.
But here is what the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) has to say about the matter. In terms of “most dangerous” cities in America, the FBI crime data may surprise you. They say the top ten most dangerous cities in America are: Anchorage, Alaska; Albuquerque, New Mexico; Memphis, Tennessee; Wichita, Kansas; Lubbock, Texas; Detroit-Dearborn-Livonia, Michigan; Spokane-Spokane Valley, Washington; Shreveport-Bossier City, Louisiana; Corpus Christi, Texas; and Mobile, Alabama.
To determine the rankings for the most dangerous metro cities in America, the FBI started with the most current FBI crime reports. It was noted that their data is not flawless, but it is the most extensive crime data available from 2020. They calculated both violent and property crime rates per 1,000 residents in each metro area. Both rates were used to rank the cities.
As for this journalist, I am shocked that cities such as New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Camden, Newark, Baltimore, and Philadelphia are not on the “Top Ten” list of most dangerous. I will take that as a good thing.
All of that shared, it is still hard to accept that since the March 16 killing of 8 people in Atlanta, Georgia, there have been 50 mass shootings in America, as of Sunday, April 18, 2021. Something is very wrong with this picture. Worse yet, since the start of the year, the U. S. has seen at least 150 mass shootings, according to data from the GVA (a non-profit based in Washington). Crime and Violence experts consider an incident to be a mass shooting if four or more people are shot, wounded, or killed, excluding the gunman.
