3rd Annual Daddy and Me Dance

It was Father’s Day and an ideal time to hold a Daddy and Me Dance. That may have been the intent that people walked away with, but it goes far beyond that for Councilman William Morgan.
Morgan, a native of the city, has hosted the dance in previous years, and it seems to get better each year. For Morgan, a young father himself, this is one of his many passions. One needs only observe him interacting with his son, and you’ll fully understand that this is his most important position and why the Daddy & Me Dance is his passion.
I had to ask Morgan about the shirts that he and his son, Chase were wearing. Morgan had on a black tee shirt with the word “Legend” emblazoned on the front, with young Chase sporting an identical shirt with the word “Legacy” across the front. This is how Morgan explained the symbolism behind the shirts:
“The meaning behind the legend is that I consider myself so as a young African American male from an underserved community, a high school graduate, who had the opportunity to play football and other top-tier sports, college-educated (though I was not the first in my family to so), positive outlook, one of the youngest people in the City of Chester to enter the political arena bringing a youthful perspective, and some meaningful, effective changes, setting the standard and forging a direction for other African American men in his family and community,” said Morgan.
“The meaning behind the legacy is always wanting my son to know that he comes from greatness. It’s about those conversations we have around the dinner table about finances, building generational wealth, businesses, bank accounts, making progress, and moving forward. That’s the legacy,” says Morgan.
Morgan is certainly building a legacy. Chase said, “If you’re the “Legend” daddy and I’m the “Legacy” that would make granddad “G.O.A.T” (Greatest of All Time).
This year’s dance was at the Club Suites at Subaru Park in Chester. The backdrop of a clear blue sky overlooking the soccer playing field and empty seats; made the perfect atmosphere for children to dream of.
Fathers showed up with their sons, daughters, and families, had their photos taken, and were entertained by a magician and a DJ spinning hits.
More than anything, this event paid homage to the power of a father (or a father figure) in the life of a child. Speaking from experience, I can say that a father’s presence in your life truly changes your perspective of the world and how you see yourself in it.
